It was the writer Norman Douglas who put Elizabeth David on the road to food fame. The author of 'Venus in the Kitchen' was a connoisseur of Mediterranean markets. He met Elizabeth Gwynne as she then was in Antibes during the war, encouraged her interest in food and persuaded her to write. Part of that story is told in 'Lunch with Elizabeth David', see: http://lunchwithelizabethdavid.blogspot.com

Hi Deb - sadly it's not mine - I think someone here in the UK wrote an article with this title in the last year or so, but a quick google search doesn't find it. It was partly based on what happened in New Orleans after Katrina, ie when our food supply breaks down, we only have three days (nine meals) before anarchy breaks out. Since all our food is delivered to supermarkets just-in-time, there's not much tolerance in the system when things go wrong.

Two suggestions - either have another go at cake and add something to make up for the lost carrot juice (applesauce springs to mind, or maybe a few spoonfuls of honey or maple syrup) or else, make carrot muffins, which can stand being a little drier than cake.

Spot on. It's nauseating in almost every way imaginable.

Love "pencil sharpenings" as a descriptor, though. "With hints of cant, and a subtle aroma of greasy hypocrisy..."
