The author of 'Venus in the Kitchen' was a connoisseur of Mediterranean markets. He met Elizabeth Gwynne as she then was in Antibes during the war, encouraged her interest in food and persuaded her to write. It was partly based on what happened in New Orleans after Katrina, ie when our food supply breaks down, we only have three days (nine meals) before anarchy breaks out. Since all our food is delivered to supermarkets just-in-time, there's not much tolerance in the system when things go wrong.
